Teer Coatings research department
Teer Coatings Limited (TCL) specialises in the provision of physical vapour deposition (PVD), primarily magnetron sputtering-based, coatings and coating equipment for a range of high performance applications, including automotive (and F1), aerospace, metal forming (including minting) and cutting, energy (including coatings for fuel cells and electrolyzers), medical equipment, oil and gas, etc. TCL also participates extensively in collaborative R&D, and for the past 6 years this has included nanocluster formation and deposition technology, for which TCL now offers commercial cluster generation equipment. TCL has a turnover of ~€4M and is based in a ~2000m2 factory in Droitwich, UK. The company has 55 employees .
Research Team
Teer Coatings Ltd will host ESR2.
Infrastructure
TCL has a high fl ux cluster-beam deposition system, capable of depositing size-selected or non-size-selected clusters.
The clusters can also be deposited on a powder support, which is a unique feature that (as far as we know) is only available at TCL. In addition, TCL has over 16 coating units dedicated to coating development and research. TCL acquired an industrial PVD, load-locked in-line coating system under Phase I of the UK DECC/TSB FC&H demonstrator programme as part of its contribution to the future Low Carbon Economy industrial supply chain, which allows the company to investigate semi-continuous, air-to-air processing. TCL has a well-equipped Testing Laboratory, able to characterize deposited coatings, particularly with respect to physical attributes, tribological properties, etc. In addition to conventional hardness testing and optical microscopy, TCL has a NanoTest instrument for nanoindentation and
nanohardness measurements, and a SEM equipped with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) for chemical composition analysis.
